ABOUT

Crescendo Music Education

Crescendo Music Education, founded in the year 2000, was established with one purpose in mind, to support and connect Music Educators. Debbie O’Shea, the director, had a vision that included somehow getting practical help to teachers all over the world. Her own experience as a music teacher, struggling to get everything done that should be done in the best way possible for the huge number of students that she works with every week, told her that there must be a better way! The exhaustion and frustration that Debbie felt day in day out just didn’t relent, no matter how much study and work that she did. The answer, she thought was in the people.

What people? Me, you and lots of others, sharing and working together to improve things, make life a little easier for each other, share ideas and insights and resources. As Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” So this is what she did. She worked to create, share, support, communicate… with music teachers everywhere.

After a few challenging years, many teachers may feel they are playing catch-up with their students.

Double duty songs are an efficient way to work smarter and not harder as students are able to prepare, present, and practice multiple concepts with the same song. In this session, participants will experience a wide variety of song literature and leave with a multitude of ideas for utilising these songs to promote musical literacy and fluency. We’ll also discuss how songs, games, and activities can be enhanced through the use of technology.

Carrie Nicholas and Tanya LeJeune are both elementary general music teachers in the Jefferson County School District of Colorado. Carrie is currently in her 24th year of teaching and Tanya is in her 28th. Both have received Kodály certification and Masters Degrees from the Colorado Kodály Institute at Colorado State University, where they have also both served on the summer faculty. Tanya and Carrie are both active presenters, having shared workshops and sessions for school districts, universities, state and national music education conferences, and Kodály and Orff chapters throughout the United States. Carrie and Tanya co-host the popular music education podcast Music Teacher Coffee Talk.
