Performance Notes
The clarinet part adds some interest and tone colour, however it is optional. The clarinet may be replaced with a C instrument such as the flute or the recorder.
The rit in bar 19 and the pause in bar 20 can be put into dramatic effect to emphasise and exaggerate the humour of the piece. At the end of the second verse, bars 33, 35 and 41 to 44, the singers ad lib speech. This relates to fighting for their share of the fat and any suitable language can be used: “I love fat”, “I want some more”, “FAT”, “Gimme fat”, “I want the fat”…… They say this randomly to each other. You may even use some gentle jostling as they argue with each other.
