I trialled a ‘sequel’ and it worked well so I thought I’d share it with you all: “Staff Wars, Yoda Style”.
We all know that Yoda likes to say his sentences backwards, so this is a reverse of Staff Wars. Instead of reading the note and writing the letter name, the students see the letter name and then notate it on the staff.
Each student has a game sheet (I photocopied the two pages back to back, but next time I think I’ll reduce them side-by-side on one A4 page) and one student sat out the front, playing Yoda. Yoda sorted the flashcards into space notes and line notes, shuffled them and showed a random flashcard to the class, while saying “A, you must write.” in his best Yoda voice. The students had until Yoda made some Yoda-like noises and shuffled the cards to notate that note on the staff before the next one was shown.
We did five space notes on the first staff line of each game, five line notes on the second staff line and then five random line or space notes for the third line, giving a score out of 15. After a few minutes explaining and setting up, the game itself really only took about six minutes of the lesson.
I hope this makes sense and is useful. The kids loved it and can’t wait to play it again so they can either match or improve their scores and probably more importantly, so that someone else can have a turn at being Yoda!
