Description
Made by Rosa Curcuruto, this sheet give you a new way to use the fabulous free game STAFF WARS found here
Here are Rosa’s instructions for the way she plays:
I know (or think) most people know about and have used ‘Staffwars’. I have a data projector & screen and have used it in class with 1 child at a time playing or having the class call out the answers and I enter the note names. I decided to create a worksheet so each child could be engaged and hopefully see their improvement (attached). How does it work????
- Each child has a sheet I play the game also and enter the answers using the keyboard (this way the students can’t see what you enter)
- year 3 start at level 1 & 2 and work their way up to level 3
- year 4 & 5 go up to level 3
- year 6 & 7 go up to level 4
- BUT at the same time I have to write down the answers for each game so then I have a record for correcting.
- If they don’t know an answer they put a slash or question mark in the box.
- When the game is finished we swap work and correct the answers.
- The students circle incorrect answers and give a tick at the end of each line/level which has no errors (it’s up to you how you choose to mark)
- The challenge is to improve each week and if they have no errors they have to aim to maintain that level. No errors – a smiley stamp 🙂
- An entire page with no errors – music award
- Special Ed students and some learning support students use a sheet with the line and space notes displayed and don’t do all the levels the rest of the class do
Most students are busting to get through the door and start work. They know that if they take too long they will miss the first few notes of the game which are then counted as errors. It’s a great way to start the lesson and only takes a few minutes. The first level takes forever so with the older classes I ‘kill’ the note when it reaches the half way mark. I know there are students who can go beyond the levels I have chosen but this is a way to have every student engaged. I found that when I played it the other ways I would lose some students who just sat there and watched the notes flying around but didn’t actually do anything. This way every child is doing something.
Hope this is useful.
