Podcast Highlights
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Crescendo Music Education Podcast, where today, we’re cranking up the volume on advice for new graduates venturing into the world of teaching music. It’s time to ignite your passion, fuel your creativity, and make learning music an unforgettable experience for every student!
I’ve used the acronym REAL FINE for my advice for graduates, here we go!
R – Relationships are the most important thing! Mostly with your students, but do not forget your fellow teachers, admin and families. Other staff are different to us.
E – Experiment. Learn constantly. Try new things. BUT keep what works, and don’t just flit from activity to activity. Keep sound pedagogy in mind. It is good to be out of your comfort zone – that is how we learn.
A – Ask for help. Get a mentor or two!
L – Look after yourself. Self-care, mental health – this will be a tough ride and you can hang on a lot easier if you are fit and well.
F – Fun, flexible
I – Ignorant – it is OK to be ignorant – you don’t know what you don’t know.
N – Network. Share with, and learn from others
E – Extra – All the other things – organised, creative, classroom management and procedures, smile and laugh, be YOU.
